Alain Ruscio, né en 1947, est un historien français spécialiste de l’histoire coloniale, en particulier de l’Indochine, du Vietnam, de l’Algérie et plus largement des rapports entre colonisation, décolonisation et représentations coloniales. Il s’est imposé comme chercheur indépendant après un parcours intellectuel centré sur l’histoire contemporaine des empires coloniaux, avec une attention particulière portée aux luttes d’indépendance et aux discours français sur la colonisation.



Né en 1947, il est associé à Paris dans certaines notices biographiques, qui le présentent comme issu du 19e arrondissement. Sa formation universitaire culmine avec un doctorat en histoire obtenu à l’université Paris I en 1984, fondé sur une thèse consacrée aux communistes français et à la guerre d’Indochine. Cette thèse marque le point de départ d’un long travail de recherche sur l’Indochine coloniale, puis sur d’autres espaces coloniaux français.



Avant de se consacrer pleinement à ses travaux d’historien, Alain Ruscio a aussi exercé comme journaliste, notamment pour L’Humanité. Il a été envoyé spécial au Vietnam et au Cambodge entre 1978 et 1980, ce qui a nourri sa connaissance du terrain asiatique et son intérêt durable pour l’histoire du Vietnam contemporain.



Plusieurs notices le décrivent également comme ayant dirigé un centre d’information et de documentation sur le Vietnam contemporain, rassemblant une importante documentation sur le sujet. Son œuvre se distingue par une forte cohérence thématique. Il a d’abord travaillé sur l’Indochine et la guerre d’Indochine, puis a élargi ses recherches à l’histoire coloniale française dans son ensemble, aux imaginaires coloniaux et aux continuités entre colonisation et racismes contemporains.

Alain Ruscio, born in 1947, is a French historian specializing in colonial history, particularly that of Indochina, Vietnam, Algeria, and more broadly, the relationship between colonization, decolonization, and colonial representations. He established himself as an independent researcher after an intellectual career focused on the contemporary history of colonial empires, with particular attention to independence struggles and French discourses on colonization.



Born in 1947, he is associated with Paris in some biographical entries, which describe him as being from the 19th arrondissement.
